For six years, I waited for my child as I wrestled with infertility. During those years of anguish, I went on a healing journey in search of a more holistic approach to infertility. As a hospital nurse and an infertility patient, I became aware of how narrowly-focused and dehumanizing the allopathic healthcare system can be and sought out information and treatment through “alternative” therapies. In the process, I healed old wounds, shifted consciousness and developed my higher sense perception. I learned to open my heart more and to love unconditionally. When I had learned the life lessons required for my new role in the world, my beloved child, Jacob, came to me.
I didn’t realize until after Jacob was born that the journey had just begun. He came into this world traumatized by his birth and later by vaccinations, issues that I discovered could only be effectively dealt with through “alternative” therapies. I left my hospital nursing job and started a practice in holistic nursing in the same hands-on therapies that I had received while experiencing infertility. My education in and healing through holistic therapies continued as I searched for the right assistance for Jacob. The quest required me to stretch out of my comfort zone and be a voice for my son, healing my own victim energy.
When Jacob was three years old, I stumbled across the Indigo Child website and bought Lee Carroll and Jan Tober’s first book, The Indigo Children. I was stunned to find Jacob’s unusual characteristics listed in the book – his regal demeanor, his strong sense of self, his persistence in being heard and having his needs met, and his inability to wait in lines. I had already discarded the authoritarian parenting techniques I was raised with when I recognized they simply didn’t work with Jacob. Jacob was different, but I didn’t realize that this difference was part of a larger phenomenon. I felt deeply honored to have been chosen to parent an Indigo, children who I knew to be ushering in a new consciousness in the world.
Jacob’s mission had begun years before he was even born. With love and compassion, his soul’s incarnation had been timed with my shift in consciousness. My desire for my child had served as a catalyst, spurring me onward in my healing process. After his birth, Jacob continued to teach me through his own difficulties, allowing himself to be the vehicle through which my path in life was revealed to me. I began to recognize the Indigo energy in children in my practice, in the babies carried by my pregnant clients and in the souls contracted to become children of infertile clients. I knew it was my life’s work to help parents of Indigos before and after their child’s arrival, as well as helping both the parents and children as they grow up.
It was humbling to become aware of how Jacob had sacrificed himself for my learning. But his soul’s purpose was not entirely selfless. He was helping me become the mother he needed for his own growth and evolution. He and I were in a soul partnership.
We know that Indigos are here to help dismantle systems that they perceive as lacking integrity, such as religion, education and government. Another dysfunctional system that labels and drugs Indigos and is in need of change is the allopathic healthcare system. Each of these systems is based on the old paradigm in which ministers, teachers, leaders and doctors are in the authoritative, powerful, parent-type role and the members, students, public and consumers are in the dependent, powerless, child-like role. Dismantling these outmoded systems begins with letting go of old hierarchal beliefs, a process that begins in the parent-child relationship.
At the root of our current dysfunctional systems are Newtonian-based paradigms – beliefs that our world is orderly, predictable and linear, and made up of solid objects composed of basic building blocks of matter. From this paradigm comes the illusion of separateness – separateness of our body systems, separateness of our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual (PEMS) selves and separateness from others. Isolationist beliefs form the basis of hierarchal relationship patterns.
Underlying the changes that Indigos are here to initiate are the theories of Einstein and of Quantum Physics. Einstein discovered that the laws of Newtonian Physics no longer apply on the very small scale. On the subatomic level, all living things are simply energy.
The new paradigm, grounded in the theories of Quantum Physics, a science founded in part by Einstein, defines the universe as an interconnected web of vibrating energy, dynamic and flowing, where the observer’s thoughts and consciousness directly impact reality on every level. Everything and everyone is energy, emanating from the divine source. We are all children of God. In the new paradigm, no individual is more powerful than or has absolute authority over another. Indigo Children intuitively know this.
The shift in the parent-child relationship begins through the quantum paradigm, a redefining of “parent” as a guide, a mentor, teacher and partner, rather than a figure of absolute authority. For adults who have spent their entire lives in the old paradigm, the shift out of lower vibration fear-based and hierarchal thinking can be difficult. The Indigos are here to help!
Parenting an Indigo Child is both a challenge and an opportunity for growth and healing. Indigo Children serve as a mirror for their parents, reflecting back unconscious behavior, bringing to the surface unhealed wounds and pushing buttons to bring about change, all done with the highest of intention. Are you frustrated and angry with your child, or are you reacting to the reflection of yourself that your child mirrors, a reflection of behavior that you don’t like in yourself? It can be difficult to unconditionally love and accept our children when we don’t unconditionally love and accept ourselves. There is no part of us that is unworthy of love. When you can accept all parts of you with loving self-talk from a positive inner parent, then you can do that for your child.
If all life is energetic, then PEMS issues are energetic imbalances, stemming from and creating lowered vibrational levels. To raise our vibrational levels we, like all living things, need fresh air, sunlight, clean water, and whole, fresh and unprocessed food. Techniques and therapies that are grounded in the new paradigm, with a common goal of removing blocks and restrictions to healing, correct energetic imbalances.
In a balanced and unrestricted state, the body’s own natural movement toward health is restored. Techniques and therapies that support the movement toward wholeness include detoxification, herbs, homeopathy, meditation, positive affirmations, practicing mindfulness, deep breathing and relaxation techniques and receiving hands-on “alternative” therapies such as energy-based healing modalities and CranioSacral therapy (CST). Indigo Children respond well to the balancing and grounding effects of hands-on therapies.
CST is a gentle, noninvasive method of detection and correction of the craniosacral (CS) system, which consists of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. In the brain, the ventricles pump cerebrospinal fluid throughout the system in a rhythm that can be quantified, qualified and felt with the hands of the therapist at any place on the body. Light touch, no greater than the weight of a nickel, is used to detect and correct imbalances and restrictions, without engaging the natural defensive reaction of the muscles. CST utilizes the body’s natural self-corrective activities and restores normal function of the CS system. A properly functioning CS system is vital to health and linked to the functioning of other body systems.
For Indigo Children, CST helps release any restrictions in their systems that may be contributing to hyperactivity, irritability, behavioral problems, digestive difficulties and learning disabilities. This is best accomplished with a therapist who is familiar with the needs of Indigo Children and who is clear, respectful and unconditionally accepting.
As there is intelligence and memory in every cell of our bodies, PEMS traumas and conflicts can be stored in the body tissues and create blocks to healing. Trauma and conflicts that are unable to dissipate and heal normally can become compacted into a localized “energy cyst.” Energy cysts can be released through “unwinding” the tension pattern in that area, freeing up the energy that was required to contain the trauma. This unwinding can be experienced as a physical and emotional release. CST helps kids release their traumas stored from birth on, as well as frustrations they may feel in trying to achieve their mission in a world still ruled by old paradigms.
CST assists parents with their PEMS needs so they can meet the challenge of raising their Indigo child. CST helps with many issues, including stress, pain, headaches, fatigue, emotional difficulties, recovery from injuries or invasive procedures and releasing stored conflicts and traumas. The verbalized frustration that many parents feel can be the key to accessing deeper trauma through CST dialoguing techniques, releasing the conflicts that we all carry. Another powerful tool for healing is the labyrinth. Indigo Children are naturally drawn to labyrinths, patterns with an equal number of left and right turns that can be walked, or in the case of mini-labyrinths, “finger” walked. Unlike a maze, there is only one entrance, only one way to the center, and no dead ends.
These paths, which first appeared more than 3,000 years ago, invite us to move and align ourselves with basic patterns found in nature that create and sustain life. The labyrinth helps us to be in the moment and remember who we are and why we are here, encouraging us to slow down and come to our center. The walk to the center is a metaphor for going to your own center. Following the path occupies your logical left brain, freeing your intuitive and creative right brain. It relaxes the mind and is a tool for connecting with the divine within ourselves.
Labyrinths can be easily built and maintained as a family project or a group project for Indigo Children on private property or on public property (with permission). Labyrinths can be made from any available material, such as rocks, bark or shells, using purchased materials such as bricks, or they can be painted on canvas or floors. A simple temporary labyrinth can be laid out on grass with rope or etched in dirt or sand with a stick.
I have built a seven-circuit labyrinth on my property for my family, and for clients to use before or after their appointments. When my now nine-year old Indigo son, Jacob, is having a difficult day, he will walk the labyrinth in our yard to center and balance himself. Instructions for labyrinth building can be easily found on the internet or in books on the subject. To locate a public labyrinth near you, use the world-wide labyrinth locator on the internet at wwll.veriditas.labyrinthsociety.org.
I am forever grateful that Jacob chose me to be his mother, to prepare me for my life’s work with Indigo Children and their parents. Let us partner with the Indigos, our greatest teachers, and hold the light for change.
